GORILLAZ

THE ESSENTIAL

Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz, from Gorillaz(2001)

19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) - Gorillaz, from G-Sides(2002)
One of the few remixes that actually improves upon the original. Eventually became so big it was released as a single and the video was changed. Features Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads on backing vocals.

Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz, from Demon Days(2005)

DARE - Gorillaz, from Demon Days(2005)
Apparently Shaun Ryder is trying to say "It's there", but because of his strong Manc accent (or more likely off his face on a hallucinogen) it came out sounding like "It's Dare" so the song was renamed. Fact.

Kids With Guns - Gorillaz, from Demon Days(2005)

Dirty Harry - Gorillaz, from Demon Days(2005)
This is an amazing transformation of the original demo that appeared as "I Need A Gun" on Damon Albarn's Democrazy album. Also check out the Schtung Chinese New Year Remix (on D-Sides) for a Chinese language version which is more interesting than you may expect.

THE ECLECTIC

Hong Kong - Gorillaz, D-Sides (2007)
One of the best songs Damon Albarn has ever written, this is simply beautiful.

Tomorrow Comes Today - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

Slow Country - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)
This one of their more easily accessible songs that is oft overlooked, I'm not sure why because it's certainly one of their best.

New Genious (Brother) - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

Dare (Soulwax Remix) - Gorillaz, D-Sides: Remixes (2007)
Easily one of the best Gorillaz remixes. Others not on this list worth a checking out are Junior Sanchez's take on DARE and the Stanton Warriors' mix of Feel Good Inc (both on D-Sides).

M1 A1 - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

Ghost Train - Gorillaz, G Sides (2002)
Up beat, danceable and extremely catchy - it's an undiscovered gem that would have made a great single.

Rockit - Gorillaz, D-Sides (2007)

Sound Check (Gravity) - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)
The fact that half way through this song Damon Albarn starts sounding like Anne the mental from Little Britain (eh-eh-ehhh?) is slightly disturbing but that doesn't wreck the track too much.

All Alone - Gorillaz, Demon Days (2005)

Faust - Gorillaz, G Sides (2002)
For those who follow the Gorillaz mythology: Murdoc's middle name was originally Alphonce, but he changed it to Faust via deed poll when he made a pact with the Devil.

Re-Hash - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

Kids With Guns (Hot Chip Remixes) - Gorillaz, D-Sides: Remixes (2007)
Serial remixers Hot Chip occasionally manage to completely re-imagine a track in a way you wish others did. There is not better example than this, like the Soluwax mix above, this adds that little bit extra.

Don't Get Lost In Heaven - Gorillaz, Demon Days (2005)

Left Hand Suzuki Method - Gorillaz, G Sides (2002)
Not a track that will appeal to everyone but it has an irresistible beat and an amazing flow that will have you revisiting this one again and again.

5/4 - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

Murdoc Is God - Gorillaz, D-Sides (2007)

Man Reasearch (Clapper) - Gorillaz, Gorillaz (2001)

We Are Happy Landfill - Gorillaz, D-Sides (2007)

SHOUT OUT LOUDS

THE ESSENTIAL

Impossible - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

Tonight I Have To Leave It - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)
It is still hard to listen ti this and not be behind of The Cure. Regardless it is a fantastic pop song.

100° - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)
This is my favourite song by the band, it is simply mesmerising.

The Comeback - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)
Perfect, beautifully written indie-pop song.

Very Loud - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)
Tortured, frustrated and emotional vocals/lyrics are what make this band so great. There is no better example than this track.

THE ECLECTIC

Please Please Please - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)
It is hard to explain how good this song is. Everything just falls into place perfectly.

You Are Dreaming - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

But Then Again No - Shout Out Louds, from Hurry Up Let's Go (single) (2003)
Easily their best b-side. Slightly quieter than a lot of their tracks, but probably the most heartfelt.

A Track And A Train - Shout Out Louds, from Oh, Sweetheart EP (2004)

Impossible (Possible Remake by Studio) - Shout Out Louds, from Impossible (single) (2007)
Cheeky remix that plays with the lyrics and adds some great bests to make the track much more positive.

My Friend And The Ink On His Fingers - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Scandinavian Version) (2005)

Normandie - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

Very Loud [Architecture In Helsinki Remix] - Shout Out Louds, from Combines EP (2006)
This is a great version. It's part remix, part cover and emphasis all the best parts in Architecture In Helsinki usual quirkiness.

Shut Your Eyes - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)

Sound Is The Word - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Scandinavian Version) (2005)

Never Ever - Shout Out Louds, from The Comeback (single) (2005)
This was also included on the Scandinavian Version of Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, which is imo the better of the two versions. It is unfortunate that a wider audience hasn't got to here this track was it is unbelievably infectious.

Hard Rain - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

The Comeback [Big Slippa Remix By Ratatat] - Shout Out Louds, from Combines EP (2006)

Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2 - Shout Out Louds, from Very Loud (single) (2005)
An updated version of the one that appeared on the Scandinavian Version of Howl Howl Gaff Gaff. This version is significantly slower and more atmospheric.

Time Left For Love - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

Hurry Up Lets Go - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)

Shut Your Eyes [Harlem Remix] - Shout Out Louds, from Combines EP (2006)
Great chilled remix that would fit into any indie DJ set.

Go Sadness - Shout Out Louds, from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)

South America - Shout Out Louds, from Our Ill Wills (2007)

Man On The Moon (REM cover) - Shout Out Louds, from Stereogum Presents... DRIVE XV: A Tribute to Automatic For the People (2007)
Their contribution to the Stereogum covers compilation, does emphasise the percussion but still manages to remain true to the original.
